What is llms.txt, and does your website need it?

Understand the optional llms.txt proposal, write a useful site guide, and avoid confusing it with robots.txt rules or a sitemap.

llms.txt is a proposed Markdown guide that gives agents concise context and useful links. It can help organize your information, but publishing it does not guarantee crawling, rankings, or mentions in AI answers.

Write the guide you would give a new reader

Describe what the website does in a short paragraph and point to the pages that explain it best. Prefer a small set of accurate, maintained links over a dump of every URL. Check the current proposal when publishing; this example is a basic site outline.

Publish and check the file

Place the plain-text file at /llms.txt on your own domain. Open that address directly and confirm it returns the guide, rather than your homepage HTML or a login screen. Follow every link before publishing. Review it when your product or navigation changes.

Keep the other site files working

A sitemap lists page URLs. robots.txt communicates crawl rules. llms.txt offers context and curated links. Fix missing public content or broken navigation first; an outline cannot make an inaccessible page readable.

Do you need it for Google’s AI answers?

Google says its AI search features do not require a special AI text file or special schema. Treat llms.txt as an optional guide for systems that use it. If your sitemap is broken or a key page shows only a loading screen, start with that problem.

Create a draft with SiteReadyFor.SI

Use our free llms.txt generator for links you provide. Paid audit reports also include a draft organized from discovered pages. You should check the names, descriptions, and destinations before uploading it. The scanner checks presence and basic structure; it cannot tell you whether a particular provider uses your file.
